Er, don' like to tell you this given the beautiful basing and all, but that machine gun is back to front!
The two longer legs of the tripod carry the training and elevating gear so face the rear while the shorter leg points forward. It's almost always fired prone, the gunner lined up with the sights and presenting a small a target as possible. Valiant don't provide a prone figure so I guess you're stuck with the daft pose supplied.
